Distractions - How to Starve Them and Feed Your Focus

In this article, I want to share with you some key things to avoid distractions and focus on the important things in your daily work.

We are living in the age of information explosion. This can easily overwhelm us and affect our daily work. It could be working in the office or even working at home.

To make the most of every day, and to maximize our work output, it is very necessary to cut off all distractions.

Definition of distractions

A distraction is anything that keeps you from achieving your goals by taking away your attention.

It could be anything- the phone, various apps on the phone, YouTube videos, a person, or the TV.

Anything that takes your attention away from your goals is a distraction.

Types of distractions

As stated before, distractions can be anything, from the TV to your phone to the office. To avoid distractions when you're in a place where they may come up, have a designated place for them—a desk in the living room if that's where you watch TV or hang out on weekends.

Internal Distractions

External distractions are unavoidable. They are used by your competitors to keep you from focusing on your work. Getting rid of them is impossible, but you can use tools that will help you manage them to a certain degree.

There are tools that can block websites or turn off notifications to prevent the distraction.

If the problem is more internal, there are other ways to control it.

By getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and doing some form of exercise, distractors will have less chance of disrupting your workflow

Get rid of the imposter syndrome and know that you can work without internal distractions.

Get into the right mindset daily in the morning so that your day will be productive and distractions won't be able to win.

External Distractions

I believe that distractions are the root of all problems. No matter the industry, whether it's business, art, or literature our lives are being pulled in so many directions. It is easy to become distracted by everything from social media to other people's priorities.

Learn to control screen time

The first step to beating your distractions is to acknowledge how much time you spend browsing the internet.

Next, have a plan for how many hours a day you can spend on your phone or computer. You need to create boundaries and rules to guard yourself against those not-so-productive moments that come with screen time.

Feed your focus

Distractions are a huge part of our workdays. As a result, we end up not being as productive as we should be.

To stay focused, do the following: turn off notifications, close your email and social media tabs, disconnect from the internet for an hour or two each day, and most importantly, set specific time periods to work.

Plan your daily routine to avoid distractions

Life has a way of making things hard if you are not careful. Distractions are an everyday struggle for even the most disciplined of us.

What can you do? You can start by planning your day! Block out time for certain activities, and stick to it.

This is important so that you don't get distracted by other tasks.

Stick to your plan

Distractions will always be there. What matters is that we prioritize and stick with our plan.

The more we push out of our focus zone, the less we'll be able to achieve in the long term. Either we're closing opportunities or making it harder for ourselves to achieve our goals and ambitions.

Learn to say No

Saying no to distractions and multitasking is difficult.

If you want to improve your focus and get more done, then you need to say no. This goes for all potential distractions, even if it's something enjoyable such as playing video games.

Distinguish the important from the urgent

It was noted that people are often distracted by urgent things that happen to them at work. It's important to distinguish between the two so you can concentrate on the things that matter most.

Keep your workspace organized

One way to control distraction is to keep your workplace uncluttered and clean.

It has a psychological effect on your mind that enables you to work in a more efficient manner.

A clean workstation speaks about a clear mind. This in turn will result in maximum work output.
